The new President Ingo Burgert has assumed office
On June 2, 2026, the founding day of the Academy, the presidency passed from Prof. Stavros Avramidis to Prof. Ingo Burgert for the next three years. Professor Burgert is Chair of Wood Materials Science at ETH Zürich and Empa and conducts research at the interface of wood science, materials engineering, and bio-inspired materials. His work focuses on understanding and modifying the hierarchical structure of wood to develop advanced, sustainable, and functional materials for future applications. Before joining ETH Zürich and Empa in 2011, he studied Wood Science and Technology at the University of Hamburg, where he also completed his doctorate. He subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher at BOKU Vienna and led a research group on plant biomechanics and biomimetics at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces. Prof. Burgert is internationally recognized for his contributions to wood materials science, wood functionalisation, cellulose-based composites, and bio-inspired materials design.
