2026 IAWS PhD Award Call
Call for nominations for the IAWS PhD Thesis/Dissertation Awards 2026
The Academy invites nominations for its 2026 PhD Thesis/Dissertation Awards, which honour exemplary collaborative doctoral research in wood science, wood technologies, and wood-based materials. Nominations must be submitted by 15 September 2026.
- Award structure:
Three awards will be conferred: First, Second, and Third Prize. All recipients will receive certificates signed by the President of IAWS.
All prize recipients will additionally be eligible for financial support of up to USD 1,000 (amount determined by travel cost/distance) to attend the next international IAWS-related conference (which is the IUFRO Division 5 & SWST Joint Conference in Tartu, Estonia, May 30 to June 3, 2027) at which IAWS is involved in conference organization and/or sponsorship. - Eligibility criteria:
The candidate must have been awarded a PhD by an institution located in a country other than the candidate’s country of origin, thereby demonstrating international collaboration.
The PhD defence must have occurred within the one year preceding the nomination deadline (i.e., between 15 September 2025 and 14 September 2026, inclusive).
The doctoral research must be in the fields of wood science, wood technologies, or wood-based materials.
Submission requirements (all documents in English)
- Curriculum vitae (maximum 2 pages), including: Candidate’s full name and email address; candidate’s country of origin; country where the PhD degree was awarded; title of the PhD thesis and date of defence (if applicable); name, institutional affiliation, and email address of the supervisor; list of publications and/or accepted/in-press manuscripts related to the PhD research.
- Extended abstract of the PhD thesis/dissertation (maximum 1 page).
Letter of recommendation from the candidate’s supervisor.

- Nominations may be submitted by the candidate or by the candidate’s supervisor.
